BIS Registration under Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS)

BIS Registration is the official approval from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) confirming that a product meets applicable Indian Standards. BIS, under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, Government of India, ensures quality, safety, and reliability through product certification, testing, and other compliance services. BIS certification acts as third-party assurance and is required for manufacturers aiming to sell their products in the Indian market.

"Meet BIS standards, the mark of trust; Manufacture with precision, products robust; Market expansion, with certification in hand; Mastery over compliance, in the Indian market you'll stand; And growth and prosperity will be your brand."

In 2012, the Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS) was introduced jointly by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) and the Department of Electronics and Information Technology (DeitY) to curb counterfeit and substandard electronics in India. BIS Registration is now mandatory for manufacturers of electronic and IT products under this scheme before they can import, sell, or distribute them in India.

What is the CRS Scheme?

Under the CRS, the BIS grants licenses for using the Standard Mark along with a unique Registration number (R-number) on the products. The registration certifies that the manufacturer declares conformity with Indian standards. CRS is governed by Scheme II of Schedule II of the BIS (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018.

As of now, 79 product categories are covered under CRS:

  3. Application Submission: The applicant uploads the verified test report and required documents within 90 days of its issuance.
  4. Document Scrutiny: BIS officials review the application, test report, and other supporting documents.

Sample of Grant Certificate for CRS

Once a product has successfully passed the testing and evaluation process under the Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS), the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) issues a formal Grant of Registration Certificate to the manufacturer. This certificate allows the manufacturer to legally affix the Standard Mark with a unique R-number on their products.

Note: This certificate serves as an official proof that the product complies with the Indian Standard Specifications and meets the safety and quality norms mandated by BIS.
